Characteristics

Shrub or small tree 0.5–4(–9) m. tall, the young shoots shiny with secretion but apparently not sticky, glabrous or with fine papilla-like indumentum; older stems grey, ridged; bark smooth or rough.. Leaves opposite; blades oblong-elliptic to elliptic, 4–12.5(–14) cm. long, 2.4–8 cm. wide, shortly to distinctly acuminate at the apex, the actual tip obtuse, gradually and then very abruptly cuneate at the base, thinly coriaceous, often pale beneath, the younger ones covered with a shiny but apparently not sticky secretion, glabrous save for fine papilla-like indumentum on and near the midrib and petiole above and small hairy domatia in the axils beneath; lateral nerves rather close and prominent with very numerous very close anastomosing veins at right-angles between them; petiole 0.5–1.8 cm. long, minutely papillate; stipules joined in a tube ± 6–8 mm. long, soon splitting and becoming cup-like, minutely papillate.. Flowers 5-merous, appearing solitary or paired in the axils but actually terminating very abbreviated shoots; pedicels 2–3 mm. long.. Calyx covered with secretion, finely puberulous; tube subglobose or ovoid, 2–3 mm. long; limb-tube 2–3 mm. long, angled by the decurrent lobes which are narrowly boat-shaped, 7–10 mm. long, 1.8 mm. wide.. Corolla white or greenish white, narrowly campanulate; tube 1.5 cm. long; lobes rounded, 5–6 mm. long and white.. Fruit globose, 1–1.2 cm. in diameter, with slightly raised branching ribs, finely spreading puberulous, crowned by the persistent calyx-limb with the lobes accrescent to 1.5 cm.; fruiting pedicels 3–7 mm. long; placentas 2, nearly meeting.. Seed-mass ± 8 mm. in diameter; seeds orange-brown, irregularly wedge-shaped with 2 large semicircular surfaces, a straight narrowly oblong surface and a curved margin, 2.5 mm. long, 1.8 mm. wide, 1 mm. thick, finely reticulate.
