Characteristics

Culms 15–50 (–100) cm high. Leaves: blade 4–21 cm long, mostly 1–3 mm wide. Panicles contracted, narrow and compact, with densely overlapping spikelets, 4–9.5 cm long; primary branches appressed. Spikelets cuneate, mostly 4–6 mm long; rachilla prolonged. Glumes often ±setaceous; lower glume 4–6 (–8) mm long, subulate; upper glume 3–4.5 mm long, acuminate. Callus shortly villous with 3 bundles of straight fine hairs. Lemma narrowly elliptic, 1–1.5 mm long, muticous or awned, silky-villous over entire dorsal surface; awn 4–7 (–8) mm long, geniculate, with column twisted.
