Leaf 150–300 mm long; free part 10–20 mm long, ending well below flowers. Spike pyramidal, 25–35 mm long, 5–40-flowered. Flowers crowded, nodding, 4.5 × 3 mm, reddish purple or green and red, often not opening widely. Dorsal sepal 2 × 1.6 mm; margins glabrous; apex blunt to shortly pointed. Lateral sepals deflexed, divergent, 3.5 × 1 mm; apex often with small gland. Petals 1.6 × 0.8 mm; margins glabrous; apex blunt to shortly pointed. Labellum stiffly hinged, broadly elliptical to ovate, 1.5 × 1 mm, thick and fleshy; margins with short irregular teeth; apex shortly pointed. Callus large, extending nearly to labellum apex.
Widespread and sometimes locally common; often seen among grass tussocks in montane and subalpine grassland, but also in lowland heathy forest and on swamp margins in moisture retentive to well drained soil.
