Characteristics

Annual with very slender taproot. Stem erect, often branching from base, minutely scaberulous above, 2–4 cm high. Basal leaves (1 or) 2 pairs, sessile, broadly ovate, to 8 mm long, obtuse, very shortly mucronate, withered at flowering. Stem leaves 3 or 4 pairs, similar to basal leaves but smaller, 4–6 mm long. Inflorescence of 1–3 terminal flowers; pedicels very short. Flowers (4-or) 5-merous, 5–8 mm long. Calyx narrowly winged; lobes ovate, 1–2.5 mm long, acuminate, obscurely 3-veined. Corolla narrowly campanulate, sky blue inside, greenish outside; tube 3–4 mm long; lobes spreading, 2–3 mm long, acute; plicae acuminately 1-(or 2)-lobed, translucent. Stamens (4 or) 5; anthers c. 0.5 mm long. Ovary stipitate, slightly compressed, narrowly winged along sutures; style 1 mm long; stigmas c. 0.5 mm long, recurved. Capsule ovoid, 3.5 mm long; fruiting gynophore 2–5 mm long. Seeds pale brown.
