Characteristics

Annual (or biennial) with very slender taproot. Stem erect, usually multi-branched, minutely scaberulous, 2–9 cm high. Basal leaves 3–6 pairs, sessile, broadly ovate, to 20 mm long, acute to acuminate, mucronate, persistent at flowering. Stem leaves 3–6 pairs, like basal leaves but becoming smaller upwards, 6–15 mm long. Inflorescence of 1–6 terminal flowers; pedicels very short. Flowers (4-or) 5-merous, 8–10 mm long. Calyx narrowly winged; lobes ovate, 2.5–3.5 mm long, acute, 1-veined. Corolla narrowly campanulate, pure white inside, pinkish outside; tube 6–7 mm long; lobes spreading, 2–4 mm long, acute; plicae usually lacerate, translucent. Stamens (4 or) 5; anthers c. 1 mm long. Ovary shortly stipitate, compressed, narrowly winged along sutures; style 0.5 mm long; stigmas c. 1.5 mm long, recurved. Capsule oblong-ovoid, 5–6 mm long; fruiting gynophore to 2.5 mm long. Seeds brown.
