Characteristics

Annual with very slender taproot. Stem erect, simple or sparsely branched, minutely scaberulous above, leafless below for 10–25 mm, 4–9 cm high. Basal leaves absent. Stem leaves 4–7 pairs, sessile, broadly ovate or oblong-ovate, 3–8 mm long, scaberulous on margins, acute to obtuse. Inflorescence of 1–6 terminal flowers; pedicels very short. Flowers (4-or) 5-merous, 10–17 mm long. Calyx not winged; lobes lanceolate, 2–4 mm long, acute, obscurely 3-veined. Corolla narrowly campanulate, sky blue inside, greenish outside; tube 9–14 mm long; lobes spreading, 2–3 mm long, acute to acuminate; plicae usually lacerate, translucent. Stamens (4 or) 5; anthers c. 1 mm long. Ovary stipitate, slightly compressed, narrowly winged along sutures; style absent; stigmas c. 3 mm long, recurved. Capsule broadly ovoid, 4–5 mm long; fruiting gynophore 15–25 mm long. Seeds pale brown.
