Characteristics

Plant monocarpic; caudex ± rhizomatous, or (subsp. major) short and robust. Internodes 2–10. Flowering stems erect, simple, sparsely branching from base, (10–) 25–55 cm high. Basal leaves linear-oblanceolate to oblanceolate, 25–100 mm long, 6–15 mm wide. Stem leaves linear to narrowly oblanceolate, 20–50 mm long, 4–10 mm wide. Terminal inflorescence relatively short and rather densely subcorymbose, usually 7–12-flowered; pedicels 2–6 cm long, not subfiliform. Flowers 5-merous, to c. 3.5 cm diam. Calyx lobes ±linear-lanceolate, 6–12 mm long, thickened and minutely but densely papillose-scabridulous on margins, ± acuminate. Corolla white with grey-violet veins; tube c. 4 mm long; lobes to 18 mm long. Stamens 5; anthers 2 (–3) mm long. Ovary 10–12 mm long; ovules 50–60; stigmas 0.6–1 mm long. Capsule 15–25 mm long. Seeds spherical to ovoid, (0.6–) 0.8–1.1 mm long, pale orange to greyish or reddish brown.
