Plant monocarpic; caudex becoming robust-woody. Internodes 1–3. Flowering stems lax to suberect, simple or sparsely branching, 5–15 (–25) cm high. Basal leaves linear-oblanceolate to subspathulate, 10–35 mm long, 2–6 mm wide. Stem leaves narrowly lanceolate, 10–20 mm long, 2–5 mm wide. Terminal inflorescence lax, 1 (–3)-flowered; pedicels (1.5–) 2.5–4 (–7) cm long, not subfiliform. Flowers 4-or 5-merous, c. 1.5 (–2) cm diam. Calyx lobes narrowly lanceolate, 3–5 (–9) mm long, smooth marginally, acute. Corolla creamy-white, usually strongly violet-tinged outside, veins colourless; tube 2–3.5 mm long; lobes 6–9 (–12) mm long. Stamens 4 or 5; anthers (1.3–) 1.5–1.9 mm long. Ovary 6–8 mm long; ovules c. 50–60; stigmas c. 0.5 mm long. Capsule to 16 mm long. Seeds ± ovoid, 0.7–0.8 mm long, straw yellow to pale orange.
Grows in damp to wet, short to tall alpine herbfield oroccasionally mixed heathland, often in skeletal soils or rocky substrate.
