Characteristics

Plant plietesial, or polycarpic and occasionally bearing remains of last year's flower stems. Caudex becoming robust. Internodes usually 3–6. Flowering stems erect, usually sparsely branched, often from base, (5–) 15–40 cm high. Basal leaves sublinear to ± spathulate, 20–100 mm long, 7–10 mm wide. Stem leaves linear to oblanceolate, 10–40 mm long, 4–8 mm wide. Terminal inflorescence lax to densely subcorymbose, mostly 2–15-flowered; pedicels (1–) 2–4 (–8) cm long, not subfiliform. Flowers 5-merous, 2.5–3.5 cm diam. Calyx lobes narrowly to broadly lanceolate, 5–7 (–10) mm long, smooth or ± papillose-scabridulous on margins, acute. Corolla white with bluish green to grey-violet veins; lobes (10–) 11–15 mm long. Stamens 5; anthers 2.3–3 mm long. Ovary 6–12 mm long, with 35–80 ovules; stigmas 0.5–1 mm long. Capsule to 20 mm long. Seeds spherical to ovoid, 0.7–1.3 mm long, ochre yellow through cinnamon and reddish brown to chocolate-brown.
