Perennial prostrate stoloniferous herb up to 4 dm. long; stems frequently tufted, sometimes creeping or scrambling, longitudinally grooved, pilose or hispid, the main stem frequently woody below; prostrate branches sometimes rooting at the nodes.. Leaves: radical ones sometimes in basal rosettes (especially in dwarf plants), the cauline ones generally opposite; lamina 5-lobed, reniform in outline, divided up to about two-thirds of the radius, frequently pink-red on the lower surface; lobes 3–10 mm. wide at the base, elliptic to rhombic in outline, pinnatilobed into 2–4(–5) parts but mostly 3-partite and inverted triangular in outline, pilose on both surfaces but rather more pronounced on the veins beneath; petiole 2–18 cm. long, pilose to more pubescent towards the lamina; stipules broadly ovate, 5–11 mm. long, 2–5 mm. wide.. Inflorescence of generally solitary flowers in the axils of the smaller of the 2 apparently opposite leaves; peduncle plus pedicel 1–8.5 cm. long, pilose to pubescent; pedicel rather indistinct (flower being solitary) but from the bracts upwards 0.5–3 cm. long; bracts generally 2, lanceolate, each 2–4 mm. long, hyaline along the margin..
