Characteristics

Rhizomatous and caespitose perennial, often rooting at lower nodes. Culms ascending to erect, 85–150 (–200) cm high. Leaves: sheaths prominently cross-veined; ligule 4.3–8.5 mm long, acute to truncate, soon shredding; blade 13–50 cm long, to 8 mm wide, often prominently cross-veined, adaxially minutely papillose to scaberulous. Inflorescences slender panicles or sometimes reduced and racemose, often interrupted, 17–50 cm long. Spikelets oblong, 20–38 mm long, with 5–14 (–20) bisexual florets; rachilla glabrous. Glumes narrowly ovate, obtuse to acute, 1-nerved; lower glume (3.5–) 4.3–5.1 mm long; upper glume (5–) 5.5–8.1 mm long. Lemma narrowly oblong to narrowly ovate, (6–) 7.9–10 (–11) mm long, acute or tapered to a narrowly obtuse usually apiculate apex, entire, dorsally rounded, smooth or scaberulous. Palea shortly exceeding lemma, bifid to bidentate, smooth and glabrous. Anthers 2.5–3 mm long. Caryopsis dorsiventrally compressed, not grooved.
