Characteristics

Weakly erect and slender annual, sometimes rooting at lower nodes. Culms geniculate, 20–100 cm high. Leaves: sheaths weakly cross-veined; ligule 5–7 mm long, obtuse to acuminate, often laciniate; blade 1.7–11 (–15) cm long, 1.6–4.5 mm wide, weakly crossveined, adaxially papillose. Inflorescences panicles or racemes, slender, interrupted, 7–25 cm long. Spikelets narrowly elliptic to oblong, 10–30 mm long, with 3–5 bisexual florets (rarely more); rachilla glabrous. Glumes broadly ovate, broadly obtuse, 1-nerved; lower glume 0.4–1 mm long or sometimes absent; upper glume 0.5–1.5 mm long. Lemma lanceolate, 5–7 mm long, acute to rounded, entire, dorsally rounded, covered with short fine suberect hairs. Palea exceeding lemma by 1–1.5 mm, entire or shallowly notched, glabrous or minutely pilose. Anthers 1.5–2.3 mm long. Caryopsis dorsiventrally compressed, not grooved.
