Characteristics

Shrubs or trees. Leaves alternate, toothed, 3-nerved from the base, ± stellate-pubescent. Flowers hermaphrodite in (2–)3–4(–5)-flowered umbelliform leaf-opposed or terminal cymes. Sepals 4–5, free, ± thick, equalling the 4–5 petals. Stamens numerous, some outer ones sterile and reduced to lanceolate blades (all fertile fide Wild); filaments shortly joined at the base in groups; anthers linear, basifixed, dehiscent by apical pores, with very short crest above, sometimes 2-apiculate at the base. Ovary 8–10-locular with ovules in 2 rows per locule; style short; stigma obtuse. Fruit woody, indehiscent or ultimately breaking up longitudinally, with fibrous mesocarp. Seeds numerous, rounded, compressed; albumen fleshy; cotyledons cordate.
