Characteristics

Tuber subglobose to turnip-shaped, ± 5 cm. long, 6 cm. in diameter, or cylindric and up to 18 cm. long, 7.5 cm. in diameter.. Leaf up to 1.2 m. tall, glabrous; petiole 20–50 cm. long or more, green with purplish shading and greenish-white flecks; pulvinus basal, hidden by subtending cataphylls; blade bi-to tripinnate, up to ± 60 cm. broad; point of attachment of basal pair of pinnae lacking subsidiary leaflets; ultimate leaflets of pinnae (3–)4–13 cm. long, (1–)1.5–4.5 cm. broad, elliptic to oblong-elliptic, acuminate, cuneate at base, mostly sessile, some petiolulate; terminal leaflets sometimes ± decurrent.. Inflorescence solitary, appearing before leaf.. Peduncle 3–25 cm. long, 0.8–1.2 cm. in diameter, glabrous.. Spathe 7.5–12 cm. long; tube subglobose to shortly cylindric, constricted apically, 1.5–2 cm. long, 1.5–2.2 cm. in diameter, reddish to deep wine red on inner surface; limb broadly elliptic to oblong-elliptic, 5.5–9 cm. long, 2.5–7.5 cm. broad, long-cuspidate, reflexing at maturity, green with purplish tingeing or reddish brown.. Spadix 7–12 cm. long; staminate part clavate, sometimes subcylindric, 4.8–9.5 cm. long, (0.8–)1.2–1.9 cm. in diameter, creamy yellow, apex rounded, constricted at base, ± contiguous with pistillate part; pistillate part ± cylindric, 1.0–2.5 cm. long, 0.8–1.5 cm. in diameter.. Staminate flower: staminal tube overtopping tepals, with anthers partly exserted during anthesis..
