Characteristics

Tree 6–20 m. high; young branchlets puberulous to shortly pubescent.. Leaves: petiole 4–7 mm. long; leaflets ovate-falcate with outer margins convex and inner nearly straight, 1.7–5 cm. long, 0.8–2.5 cm. wide, ± obtusely acuminate, prominently venose both sides, glabrous except near base, ± translucently dotted.. Panicles up to ± 8 cm. long and wide; branches to ± 4 cm. long, puberulous to shortly pubescent.. Flower-buds sessile or nearly so, globose, with very caducous bracteoles.. Flowers white.. Inner sepals ± 3 mm. long, outer ± 4 mm. long.. Stamens ± 5–7 mm. long.. Leaves paripinnate, unijugate; stipules not seen, apparently early caducous; petiole 0.3–0.9 cm long, sparsely puberulous; leaflets 2–3.8 × 1.2–2.1 cm, ovate, asymmetric, the inner margin almost straight, the outer curved and subcordate at the base, apex acuminate, glabrous; midrib distinct, with 2–3 lateral veins arising close to the base, venation slightly prominent on both surfaces, resin vesicles in areolae few or none.
Pod 3 × 2.1 cm, broadly obovate, slightly asymmetric, flattened, glabrous, the wall chartaceous, reticulation prominent, 1-seeded, indehiscent, with a small semilunate dorsal wing adjacent to the style remnant.
Ovary c.1 mm diameter, subcircular, 2-ovulate, pilose mainly on the lower suture; stipe very short, with a few spreading hairs; style c.4 mm long, glabrous; stigma capitate, bilobed.
Inflorescences axillary and terminal, paniculate; axis terete, pubescent with a mixture of longer and shorter hairs; bracts and bracteoles very early caducous (not seen).
Calyx lobes 4, c.3 × 1–2 mm, elliptic, glabrous and with numerous resin vesicles outside, puberulous inside.
Seed dark brown, shiny, c.15 × 12 mm, broadly elliptic to suborbicular, flattened, exarillate.
Stamens 10; filaments c.4 mm long, glabrous; anthers dorsifixed.
Branchlets pale brown, smooth, soon becoming grey, glabrous.
Flowers 4–5 mm long; pedicels 0.4–0.8 mm long, terete.
Tree 6–8 m (to 20 m in Tanzania) tall.
