Characteristics

Capsules up to 2 cm. long, cylindrical or narrowly obconical, often slightly curved upwards, prominently c. 10–nerved and with the persistent style–base forming a hard cone on the top.

Leaves up to 12–50 x 2–6 mm., narrowly elliptic to linear or narrowly oblanceolate, attenuate, ± acute, ± hirsute; margin incrassate, ± undulate–crenate with small projecting teeth.
Style hairy below; style–lobes c. 0·8 mm. long, with 2 tiny glands at the base; pollen–collecting hairs present on style– lobes and immediately below them.
Calyx–lobes (4)5, 3–6(9) mm. long, narrowly triangular to narrowly oblanceolate, sometimes revolute, glabrous or ciliate, usually sparsely denticulate.
Corolla 5–12 mm. long, blue or white, puberulous inside towards the base; lobes (4)5, united up to c. halfway.
Seeds 0·5–0·7 mm. long, narrowly elliptic to elliptic; testa sulcate, usually with hair–like projections.
Stamens (4)5, 4–5 mm. long; filament–bases dilated, almost cross–shaped, ciliate; anthers 2–2·5 mm. long.
Flowers sessile or shortly pedicellate; pedicel elongating in fruit up to 25 mm.
Annual usually erect herb, up to 60 cm. tall, often much–branched from the base.
Hypanthium narrowly obconical, c. 10–nerved, glabrous or glabrescent.
Inflorescence usually well demarcated, lax.
