Ovary inferior, 2–locular; ovules numerous; style shorter than the corolla, 2–lobed, upper part with pollen–colleting hairs, lower part glabrous or hairy; 2 glands sometimes present at the base of the style–lobes.
Capsule thin–walled, indehiscent, tardily opening by the irregular decomposition of the pericarp between the persistent lateral nerves.
Stamens (3)4–5, free; filament–bases almost linear to broadly dilated, ciliate or glabrous.
Seeds numerous; testa sulcate, sometimes with hair–like projections.
Inflorescences ± leafy, monochasial.
Corolla campanulate, (3)4–5–lobed.
Leaves alternate, sessile, flat.
Calyx–lobes (3)4–5, accrescent.
Flowers ± regular, protandrous.
