Characteristics

Shrubs or trees, <dioecious>. Branchlets 4-angled. Leaves persistent, opposite; stipules present; petiole present; blade margins entire or toothed; venation pinnate. Inflorescences axillary, cymes. Flowers unisexual, radially symmetric; perianth and androecium hypogynous; hypanthium absent; sepals (3–)4, distinct; petals (3–)4, white; nectary intrastaminal, 4-lobed, fleshy. Staminate flowers: stamens 4, free from and inserted between lobes of nectary; staminodes 0; pistillode present. Pistillate flowers: staminodes 0; pistil 2-carpellate; ovary superior, <adnate to nectary at base>, 2-locular, placentation axile; style absent; stigmas 2; ovule 1 per locule. Fruits drupes, <bluish black>, 2-locular, ellipsoid to ovoid, apex not beaked. Seeds 1 per locule, sometimes 1 per fruit by abortion, ovoid, not winged; aril absent.
