Characteristics

A glabrous spinuous shrub. Branches of two kinds; the long ones striate-angular, greyish-brown, the twigs tetragonous; the short branches very abbreviated and bearing tufts of leaves. Spines very slender. Leaves alternate on the longer branches, tufted on the short branches, membranous, stipulate; stipules sub-filiform, about 2 mm long; petiole 5-8 mm long, slender; lamina 2-4.5 cm long, 1-2.5 cm wide, ovate or elliptic-rhomboid, rounded or slightly obtusely-acuminate, with a minute indentation at the apex (the leaves on the short shoots never acuminate) and a cuneate base; margin crenato-serrulate; venation closely reticulate, with the midrib and veins slender and prominent on both surfaces. Inflorescence frequently solitary in the axils of the leaves, cymose. Peduncle slender, 0.7-2 cm long. Pedicel 1.5-2 mm long. Flowers not seen. According to Loesener (in 'Bull, de L’Herb. Boiss.' 4, 431: 'Sepals 5, rotundate, ciliolate; petals and stamens 5; ovary 3-chambered.' Fruit a dry capsule, 5-6 mm long.
