Characteristics

Suffrutex, up to 1 m high; stems erect and spreading from underground rootstock. Branchlets striate, angular when young, becoming terete. Leaves fascicled, coriaceous, green; lamina lanceolate-oblong, 15-50 x 3-8 mm, apex acute, obtuse or mucronate, base long-tapering, margins entire or with few teeth or rudiments of teeth; petioles very short. Inflorescences axillary, few-flowered cymes. Flowers white. Sepals triangular, ± 1 mm long, margins laciniate. Petals oblong, ± 1.5 mm long, margins laciniate. Disc sulcate, margins crenate. Male flowers: stamens shorter than petals. Female flowers: staminodes shorter than ovary; ovary 3-locular; stigma 3-branched. Fruit a 3-valved capsule, globose, 4-5 mm long, yellowish, smooth, transversely striate when dry. Seeds partially enveloped by yellow aril.

Frutices glabri, spinosi, erecti. Rami alii longii, teretes, striati, cano-fusci, alii brevissimi, folius fasciculatis. Ramuli sub-angulati. Spinae graciles, circa 1 cm longae. Folia alterna vel fasciculata, coriacea; petioli 1 mm longi; laminae lanceolatae, 1.5-4 cm longae, 0.3-0.8 cm latae, acutae, basi cuneatae; margines serrati supra inedium; nervis prominentibus. Flores axillares, 3-4-nati, 5-parti. Sepala 1 mm longa, lato-oblonga, marginibus fimbriatis. Petala 2-5 mm longa, sub-orbiculata, carnosa, marginibus integris. Filamenta 1 mm longa, baso latiore. Discus carnosus sulcatus, margine depresso crenato. Ovarium 3-loculare; stylus brevissimus, stigmate 3-lobo. Ovula in loculis 2, erecta. Fructus non vidi.
