Perennial scapose herb with a woody rootstock, occurring in dense mats.. Leaves elliptic or obovate in outline, 4–7 cm long, 1.5–2.5 cm wide, shallowly to deeply pinnatifid; lobes ovate-oblong, irregularly toothed and apiculate, very sparsely arachnose and multicellular-hairy above, felted beneath; petiole 2–4.2 cm long, ± flat, widening to clasping base.. Scape up to 4 cm long bearing one capitulum; capitula 0.5–1(–2.5) cm diameter; involucre 3-seriate; phyllaries spatulate, lanceolate or ovate, 5–6 mm long, 1–2 mm wide, the inner phyllaries with scarious margins, often stained purple; all phyllaries densely arachnose on outer surface, glabrous within; receptacle fringed by scales resembling those of the pappus.. Ray florets (4–)8–12, yellow, spreading, obovate, tubular for 1/3 of their length, with 2–3 apical teeth and 4 veins, 3–5 mm long, 1.5–2 mm wide; outer surface of floret arachnose.. Disc florets 8–15, urn-shaped, yellow, 3–3.5 mm long, divided into lobes for 1/3 or more of the floret length, lobes reflexed or spreading, base of widest part of floret with long arachnose hairs, tube of floret shortly hairy.. Achenes turbinate, 2–3 mm long, 1.2–2 mm wide, 4–5-costate, transversely rugose, glabrous; pappus partially united, reflexed, and falling as achenes develop, scales ovate, up to 0.5 mm long, long-acuminate, laciniate.
