Ray florets pistillate; disc florets hermaphrodite, 5-lobed. Anthers united, with sagittate bases and ovate, obtuse apical appendages. Style branches patent with rounded tips. Achenes turbinate; pappus of few to many free or partially united membranous scales.
More
Achenes turbinate, ribbed, with a basal coma of long or short hairs; pappus 2-several-seriate, occasionally reduced or wanting, the inner pappus of delicate hyaline lanceolate scales equalling the corolla tube in length, the outer pappus smaller.
Disk-florets numerous, hermaphrodite; corollas infundibuliform, deeply regularly 5-lobed; anther bases sagittate; style branches thickened-connate to near the Ups, and free above as short blunt arms.
Leaves radical sessile elliptic, oblanceolate or subspathulate, entire, dentate or pinnatifid, usually white-felted on the undersurface.
Involucres broadly to narrowly campanulate; phyllaries free, few-many-seriate, scarious-hyaline on the margins.
Ray-florets female, uniseriate; rays strap-shaped, 3-denticulate; style terete, branches free and lanceolate.
Scapose perennial herbs from woody, often rhizomatous rootstocks, occasionally stoloniferous.
