Characteristics

Dioecious trees or shrubs with some long shoots and many condensed short shoots. Leaves pinnate; leaflets entire, asymmetric at least at the base, ± notched at apex. Flowers regular in axillary fascicles of cymes, often appearing before the leaves; sepals 5, free; petals lacking; disk hemispherical with the filaments inserted into pockets on its surface. Male flowers: stamens 4–6, much exserted; ovary rudiment absent. Female flowers: staminodes present; ovary ± 3-lobed, with 3-fid style. Fruit coloured, capsule-like, 3-locular, the locules 1-seeded, but mostly indehiscent or irregularly rupturing. Seeds 1–2, covered by a fleshy aril.
