Leaf blades often red when young or with the nerves red beneath, 5–16.5 × 1–7.7 cm, oblong to oblong-lanceolate or oblong-elliptic or much narrower and lanceolate to oblanceolate, acuminate at the apex, usually distinctly so with acute or attenuate point, rarely only shortly cuneate at the base, slightly coriaceous, glabrous or very sparsely to densely appressed bristly on the nerves beneath; petiole often red when young, 4–10 mm long; stipules 4–7 mm long with thickened median part drawn out to a subulate point.
Corolla mostly white spotted with pink inside but sometimes often pure white or pure pink, ?rarely with yellow markings, narrowly campanulate but strongly narrowed at the extreme base; tube (0.7)0.9–1.2 cm long, sparsely to densely appressed pubescent outside; lobes (3.5)5–8.5 × 4–6 mm, ovate, obtuse.
Calyx tube 1–1.5 mm long; limb with limb-tube and lobes ± equal in length, together 2–4 mm long, the lobes with a median thickened part protruding as subulate apices from the thinner sinuses, or sometimes the limb splitting irregularly as well.
Shrub or small understorey tree 3–12(15) m tall with a rather bushy crown and striate pale grey-brown bark; stems pale, glabrous or the young parts slightly pubescent, the bark ± fissuring longitudinally but not peeling off.
Fruit red-black to greenish-purple, subglobose, 1.1–1.3 cm in diameter, slightly pubescent particularly near the persistent calyx limb and the pedicel.
Inflorescence elements (1)2–6(or more)-flowered; pedicels 2–5(6) mm long (the longest fruiting measurements), pubescent.
Style white or pink, glabrous, slightly 10-ribbed towards upper part.
Anthers included or exserted for one third of their length.
Seeds ± ovoid or half-globose, 7 × 4.5 mm, rugulose.
