Characteristics

Straggling shrubs up to 1.3 m high with long weak branches; young branches sparsely pilose. Leaves 3-6.5 cm long, 1.5-3 cm broad, cuneate or obovate-cuneate, gradually narrowed below, 5-9-dentate or lobulate-dentate in the upper half; sparsely to densely pilose or hirsute on the upper surface, less densely hairy to glabrous underneath. Racemes terminal, many-flowered, contracted in flower, very lax in fruit; rhachis glabrous. Sepals 7-9.5 mm long, linear-oblong, densely pilose; outer 2 cucullate; inner 2 saccate with broad membranous margins. Petals 10-16.5 mm long, 6.5-11.5 mm broad, obovate, rounded, shortly clawed, each with a papillate appendage. Filaments 4-5.5 mm and 5.5-7 mm long, the short ones each with a large appendage. Anthers 3-3.5 mm long. Ovary oblong with a long, slender style as long as or longer than the ovary; ovules 6-8. Fruits 6-8 cm long (including the style), 7-8 mm broad, linear-oblong with straight margins; valves flattened, strongly 3-nerved (sometimes with 2 or 4 additional weaker veins); style 1.1-1.4 cm long, stoutly subulate. Seeds 6 x 5 mm, subcircular, winged.
