Leaves sessile, glabrous or hairy, ciliate, mucronate, filiform to elliptic-oblong or obovate, entire or with small lobes. Flowers white, purple or mauve. Inflorescence a raceme. Sepals oblong to oblong-ovate, glabrous to hairy; outer 2 cucullate, horn-tipped or thickened at apex; inner 2 saccate or all 4 with horn-like or callose tip. Petals obovate-oblong or obovate-circular, each with large papillate appendage. Fruit linear, margins straight or irregularly wavy. Seeds flat, winged.
Perennial to 90 cm, sometimes hairy below. Leaves exstipulate, filiform to obovate, sometimes toothed, fleshy. Flowers white, mauve or purple, petals with basal appendages, ovules 20-50. Fruits linear, 25-110 mm long.
