Characteristics

Plants mostly 120-300 mm high. Corm bell-shaped with flat base, mostly 7-12 mm diam.; tunics overlapping, dark brown, outer layers splitting into sections below. Stem simple or 2-or 3-branched from near base, sometimes also from aerial axil. Leaves 4 or 5, lower 3 or 4 basal, usually reaching to ± base of spike, straight or falcate, mostly 4-8 mm wide, uppermost leaf shortest, sometimes entirely sheathing. Spike mostly 3-to 7-flowered; bracts green, often red later becoming dry distally, outer 7-12 mm long, inner slightly shorter. Flowers salver-shaped, white then with outer tepals red to brown outside and crepuscular, or yellow with outer tepals flushed brown outside and diurnal, sweetly scented when white; perianth tube cylindric, mostly 5-9 mm long, expanded near mouth; tepals (9-)12-16 mm long, elliptic, shallowly spooned. Filaments 3-4 mm long; anthers 3.5-7.5 mm long, ± horizontal, white or yellow; pollen white or yellow. Style branches ± 6 mm long, reaching to between middle and tips of anthers in closed flower. Capsules obovoid, 7-10 mm long. Seeds light brown, angular.

Perennial herb, geophyte, 0.08-0.25 m high; corm ± symmetric, campanulate to triangular, base flat, tunics imbricate; stem erect, single or 3-5-branched. Leaves 3 or 4(5), falcate or erect and ensiform, obtuse, margins slightly thickened, hyaline. Bracts herbaceous, reddish, becoming dry at apices. Inflorescence a (1-)3-8-flowered spike; flowers salver-shaped, white, pale to deep yellow or cream-coloured, outer tepals flushed red, pink or brown on reverse; perianth tube cylindric, 4-9 mm long; tepals subequal, 12-18 x 5-7 mm, ovate to elliptic. Stamens up to 12 mm long. Ovary 2-3 mm long; style branches 6 mm long. Flowering time Aug., Sept. Capsule obovoid, 7-10 mm long.
