Characteristics

Flowering culms 10–66 cm high. Leaf blades flat or involute or convolute, 3.5–16 cm long, 0.5–3.5 mm wide. Inflorescences paniculate, 2–20 cm long. Spikelets pedicellate, broadly ovate to circular, as long as wide, 2–4 mm long, 3–6-flowered, with 1 (–3) bisexual florets. Glumes unequal in length; lower glume 1–2 mm long; upper glume at least half the spikelet length, 1.5–2.8 mm long. Basal lemma semi-ovate in side view, 2–3.5 mm long, with hairless or ciliolate margins; midnerve scaberulous on edge of wing; lateral nerves closer to midnerve than to margins. Palea conspicuous; apex ciliate; keels prominent, ciliolate to ciliate (on edges of wings). Caryopsis biconvex. Incomplete florets 2–5 per spikelet.
