Characteristics

Culms slender. Leaf-blades short, lanceolate. Inflorescence made up of 1-sided spikes disposed along a central axis. Spikelets 2-flowered with the florets dissimilar, the lower hermaphrodite, the upper ♀ or hermaphrodite; rhachilla disarticulating between the florets; glumes persistent, shorter than the florets; lower lemma firmly membranous, becoming thickened, acuminate; upper lemma much smaller than the lower, crisply papery, obtuse to subacute; stamens 3. Caryopsis subglobose, slightly dorsally flattened.
