Characteristics

Large canopy lianas; trunk 10 cm or more broad; dark brown, densely len-ticellate, all but the older stems densely ferruginous tomentose. Leaves opposite, obovate, rounded and cuspidate to short-acuminate at the apex, tapered to a narrow, cuneate, rounded or subcordate base, 12-45(-67) cm long, 6-22(-28) cm wide, glabrous above except on the veins, densely hirsute-villous beneath with branched trichomes, with 9-14 pairs of major lateral veins, impressed above, raised below; petioles densely tomentose, 0.5-2.0 cm long, bearing a pair of prominent subulate stipules at about the middle on the upper side. Inflorescence axillary, of stalked umbels; peduncles short or to 8 mm long, 2-4 per axil; pe-duncles, pedicels and calyx densely tomentose; pedicels 1-2 cm long, with thick T-shaped trichomes. Flowers 5-parted; sepals blunt, to 3 mm long, eglandular or 4 of them bearing 2 red-orange, shiny, ovate glands to 1.5 mm long; petals yellow, clawed, fimbriate, the petal opposite the eglandular sepal held somewhat erect and marked with orange, its fimbriate margins gland-tipped; stamens 10, of 2 lengths, shorter than the styles and curling after the anthers have fallen; styles 3, interspersed with dense straight trichomes, 2 twisted to either side of the erect petal, the stigma subterminal. Fruit a schizocarp of 3 samaras, the lateral wing subreniform or broadly obovate-elliptic, firmly membranaceous, radially veined, erose at the margin, 12-18 mm long, 7-10 mm wide, the dorsal wing much re-duced, triangular, thickened to the base, 1.5-2.0 mm high, to 2.5 mm long, the seminiferous area dorsally tuberculate and densely hispid with stiff straight, point-ed trichomes; between lateral and dorsal wings, usually 1 or 2 thin, linear appen-dices ca. 2-3 mm long.
