Characteristics

Shrub or tree to 13 m; branchlets glabrous, with lenticels. Leaves somewhat coriaceous, glabrous or nearly so, broadly ovate to nearly elliptic, obtuse to acute; lamina mostly 7–13 cm long, 3–6 cm wide, serrate-crenate; base obtuse to acutely cuneate or decurrent; secondary veins 6–9 pairs; petiole 6–15 mm long. Inflorescence spicate, 5–13 mm long; rachis pubescent; bracts broadly ovate, abruptly acuminate, c. 2 mm long; bracteoles c. 2 mm long, entire or lobed, villous on margins. Flowers 7–8–merous. Hypanthium cup-or bell-shaped, 1–1.5 mm long, pilose, enlarging after anthesis. Sepals and petals linear-oblong, acute or obtuse at the apex, villous; sepals c. 2.5 mm long; petals 2.8 mm long. Stamens in fascicles of 3 or 4; filaments pilose towards base, up to 3 mm long. Disc glands glabrous, cushion-shaped. Ovary villous inside; ovules c. 12; styles 4 or 5, pilose.
