Caespitose or shortly rhizomatous. Culms 25–160 cm high. Leaves: basal sheaths with margins connate, glabrous or scabrous with retrorse hairs at base; ligule 0.2–2 mm long, abaxially hairy; blade tightly folded or involute, 6–26.5 cm long, 0.2–0.7 mm diam., pliant, pointed at apex but hardly pungent, adaxially scabrous to puberulous, abaxially glabrous, sometimes scabrous on nerves, with midrib prominent. Panicles open, 4.5–27 cm long. Spikelets 6.8–17 mm long; pedicel slender. Glumes c. 1/2–3/4 length of basal lemma; lower glume 3.8–5.5 mm long, 1 or 3-nerved with lateral nerves short; upper glume 4.7–6.5 mm long, 3-nerved, with midnerve scaberulous toward apex. Lemma 5.5–7.7 mm long, obtuse or emarginate, muticous or very shortly awned, membranous to chartaceous, (3–) 5-nerved, papillose to minutely scabrous, usually with a band of pigment across apex. Lodicules glabrous or apically ciliolate.
