Caespitose. Culms 55–185 cm high. Leaves: basal sheaths with margins connate, glabrous or sometimes minutely scabrous; ligule to 7 mm long, abaxially sparsely hairy; blade flat or folded, 6.5–76 cm long, 2–8 mm wide when flattened, hooded at apex, somewhat stiff, adaxially minutely scabrous or smooth, abaxially minutely scabrous and finely ribbed with prominent midrib. Panicles open, 18–34.5 cm long. Spikelets 7.7–14 mm long; pedicel slender. Glumes approximately 1/2 length of basal lemma; lower glume 4.7–7.2 mm long, 3-nerved; upper glume 5.5–9.4 mm long, 3 or 5-nerved, with midnerve and lateral nerves scabrous. Lemma 5.5–10.2 mm long, acute to obtuse or emarginate, awnless or with awn to 3 mm long, membranous to chartaceous, 5–7 (–11)-nerved, papillose to scabrous apically. Lodicules glabrous.
From near sea-level to subalpine-alpine areas, often inopen, wet (e.g. swampy, boggy, waterlogged) sites of eucalyptwoodlands/forests.
