Characteristics

Trees, evergreen, perennial, monoecious, often appearing dioecious; stems and foliage without latex. Indumentum of simple or medifixed multicellular trichomes, glandular trichomes absent, stinging trichomes absent. Stipules entire, inconspicuous, deciduous. Leaves alternate, petiolate, elobate, penninerved, entire, with 2 glands at base of lamina. Inflorescences terminal or axillary, paniculate, solitary, unisexual with flowers in bracteate clusters. Male flowers pedicellate; sepals 5, imbricate, free; petals 5, imbricate, free; disc of 5 glands; stamens 10–16, filaments shortly connate into column; anthers dorsifixed, bilobate, thecae oblong and longitudinally dehiscent; pistillodes absent. Female flowers pedicellate; calyx lobes 5, imbricate, free; petals 5, imbricate, free; disc of 5 glands; ovary 2-locular, ovules uniloculate; styles 2, bifid, shortly connate at base. Fruit capsular, bilocular, indehiscent and hard, surface smooth. Seeds ellipsoid; testa crustaceous; albumen fleshy; ecarunculate; cotyledons broad, flat.
