Hymenophyllum peltatum (Poir.) Desv.

Hyménophyllum pelté (fr)

Species

Angiosperms > Zingiberales > Zingiberaceae > Hymenophylloideae > Hymenophyllum

Characteristics

Rhizome filiform, wiry, glabrescent. Fronds 1.5–17 cm long. Stipe 0.5–6 cm long, apically winged. Lamina linear to ovate-lanceolate, 2-or 3-pinnatifid, 1.5–10 cm long, 0.5–2 cm wide; wing on the main rachis tapering towards the base, sometimes with a pair of shortly stalked basal pinnae; secondary segments branching only from the acroscopic side of primary pinnae, simple or divided into 2 or more segments. Ultimate segments 3–6 mm long, 0.5–1.0 mm wide; margins toothed. Sori borne on short branches arising acroscopically from the primary segments, 2–5 in a row, rarely 1; involucre ovate to almost round, often pointed, bilabiate, divided to the middle or below, 1–2 mm long, 0.5–1 mm wide, usually broader than the ultimate segment on which it is borne; margins entire, rarely finely crenate; receptacle included or slightly exserted.
More
Rhizome filiform, with or without sparse hairs; stipites rather distant to approximate. Stipes filiform, 1-4 cm. long, not winged, with a few hairs at base when young. Rhachis filiform narrowly winged in upper part. Lamina 2-8 cm. long, narrow-oblong, rather dark green, pinnate to pinnatifid; segs developed on abaxial side of pinnae, linear, coarsely toothed. Sori on short lateral segs near base of abaxial side of pinnae, free or nearly so. Indusium c. 1·5 mm. long, broadly oblong, deeply 2-valved; valves with entire to minutely crenulate margins. Receptacle included.
Rhizome creeping. Fronds borne 5-50 mm apart; stipe filiform, narrowly winged for part of its length; lamina narrowly oblong to linear with lowest pinnae usually reduced, 10-180 mm long and up to 15 mm broad; pinnae glabrous, bifid to unilaterally pinnatifid on acroscopic side forming up to 6 linear-oblong serrate lobes up to 1.5 mm broad with rounded apices; rhachis narrowly winged. Sori usually on basal acroscopic segments of pinnae, with ovate rounded entire indusial valves c. 1.5 mm broad, lamina around sorus reduced or absent.
Rhizome widely creeping, irregularly branched, up to 0.1 mm in diam., with scattered simple hairs. Fronds spaced, up to 110 mm long. Stipe glabrous or with few simple hairs. Lamina linear, 2-pinnatifid to 2-pinnate, up to 180 mm long, unequally pinnatifid acroscopically, lobes serrate. Sori on proximal acroscopic segments with entire indusial valves.
Perennial with branched rhizome. Fronds 2-pinnatifid to 2-pinnate, stipe partially narrowly winged, lamina to 18 cm long, unequally pinnatifid acroscopically, lobes serrate. Null Sori on proximal acroscopic segments with entire indusial valves.

Environment

Lithophytic, often beside streams (grows on banks and on rocks), in alpine and subalpine areas or at lower altitude as a lithophyte or an epiphyte on fallen logs and tree trunks (often Nothofagus cunninghamii and Atherosperma moschatum) in cool-temperate to subtropical rainforest.
