More
False panicle 15–40 cm long, narrow, scanty; spatheoles 2–4 cm long, narrowly lanceolate, glabrous or thinly hirsute, turning reddish-brown; peduncles 1–2.5 cm long, a little over half as long as the spatheole, pilose above with yellowish hairs; racemes 1–2 cm long, 4–7-awned per pair, laterally exserted, deflexed; raceme-bases subequal, the superior 1–1.5 mm long, flattened, stiffly barbate, with an inconspicuous scarious rim.
Loosely tufted, slender perennial 300-1300 mm high; stilt roots absent; in clumps due to short rhizomes. Leaf blade to 300 x 2-5 mm. Spatheole 20-40 mm long; peduncle 10-25 mm long; raceme bases subequal, flattened; raceme pairs with 4-6 awns. Sessile spikelet 4.5-5.0 mm long, usually dark purple with white hairs; awn 15-25 mm long; callus cuneate. Pedicellate spikelet 4-7 mm long, villous, awn 1-3 mm long; anther 1.5 mm long.
Slender perennial, rhizomatous and tufted (loosely), up to 1.3 m high. Leaf blades up to 300 mm long, 2-5 mm wide. Spikelets (sessile) 4.5-5.0 mm long (usually dark purple with white hairs, callus cuneate). Spatheoles 20-40 mm long; peduncles 10-25 mm long; raceme pairs with 4-6 awns 15-25 mm long; raceme bases subequal, flattened; pedicellate spikelets villous.
Sessile spikelets 4.5–5 mm long; callus c. 0.5 mm long, cuneate, narrowly obtuse at the apex; inferior glume oblong-lanceolate, usually dark purple beneath a covering of white hairs; awn 1.5–2.5 cm long, the column puberulous with pallid hairs.
Laxly caespitose perennial arising from a short rhizome clad in white cataphylls; culms up to 130 cm high and 1–3 mm in diameter at the base, erect or ascending, wiry and slender, without stilt roots.
Leaf sheaths glabrous (rarely the inner, protected, ones pubescent); leaf laminas up to 30 cm × 2–5 mm, firm but not rigid, scabrid on the margins and scaberulous on the nerves.
Pedicelled spikelets 4–7 mm long, villous with white hairs, terminating in a short awn-point 1–3 mm long; callus scarcely developed; pedicel-tooth obscure.
Homogamous spikelets 5–6 mm long, a single pair at the base of the inferior raceme only, villous with white hairs.
