Annual; culms 60–200 cm. high, erect.. Leaf-blades up to 30 cm. long, 4 mm. wide.. False panicle 20–60 cm. long, narrow 2–5-tiered, usually with the successive tiers densely fastigiate; spatheoles linear, 3–7 cm. long, at length reddish brown, the peduncles up to half as long; racemes 1–2 cm. long, 2-awned per pair, not deflexed; raceme-bases unequal, the upper 6.5–10 mm. long, glabrous.. Homogamous pairs 1 at the base of the lower raceme, 2 at the base of the upper.. Sessile spikelet 6.5–10 mm. long, glabrous; callus 2–3 mm. long, pungent; awn (4–)5–7.5 cm. long, hirtellous with fulvous hairs 0.7–1 mm. long.. Pedicelled spikelet with an awnlet 1–4 mm. long.
