Caespitose perennial; culms 1.2–2 m. high.. Leaf-blades up to 30 cm. long, 5 mm. wide, dull green.. False panicle narrow, congested, 15–30 cm. long; spatheoles lanceolate-linear, 2–3 cm. long, green tinged with russet, the peduncles ± half as long; racemes 1.5–2.5 cm. long, 5–7-awned per pair, seldom deflexed; raceme-bases unequal, the upper 2.5–3 mm. long, flattened, glabrous or sparsely ciliate on the margins.. Homogamous pairs 1 at the base of the lower raceme only.. Sessile spikelet 5 mm. long, glabrous; callus square to oblong or almost semicircular, 0.5 mm. long, broadly obtuse; lower glume sometimes with raised nerves; awn 1.5–2.5 cm. long, puberulous.. Pedicelled spikelet acuminate.
