Coarsely tufted perennial arising from a short slender rhizome; culms 2–3 m. high, robust, up to 8 mm. diameter, erect, usually supported by stilt roots.. Leaf-blades 30–60 cm. long, 3–18 mm. wide.. False panicle narrowly oblong, 30–50 cm. long, loose or somewhat contracted; spatheoles narrowly lanceolate, 2.5–4 cm. long, turning reddish brown, the peduncles 1/3–1/2 as long (sometimes almost equal in length); racemes 1.5 cm. long, 4–7-awned per pair, deflexed; raceme-bases subequal, the upper 1.5 mm. long, flattened, stiffly bearded, with a little scarious lobe at the tip.. Homogamous pairs 1 at the base of the lower raceme only.. Sessile spikelet 4–6 mm. long, white villous; callus narrowly oblong, 0.6 mm. long, narrowly obtuse; awn 2.2–4 cm. long.. Pedicelled spikelet white villous, acuminate or more often with an awn 2–6 mm. long.
