Annual or perennial sometimes subwoody herbs. Leaves alternate or whorled, often crowded, linear, entire, succulent, glaucous, stipulate. Stipules persistent, membranous, entire, adnate to the leaf-base, sometimes stem-clasping. Inflorescences axillary, long-pedunculate, simply umbelliform. Sepals 5, free. Stamens 3–15, alternate with sepals, singly or (when more than 5) in pairs or fascicles, hypogynous. Disc absent. Ovary superior, syncarpous, of 3–5 carpels, 3–5-locular; ovules numerous, axile; stigmas 3–5, short.
