Characteristics

Perennial herb, 50-120 mm high; small, growing singly. Rhizome oblong, 12-40 x 8-12 mm. Leaves 4-10, well developed at flowering, loosely arranged in 3 ranks; blade linear-triangular, 50-120 x 3-4 mm, flaccid, membranous; veins flush with surface, 2 near each margin raised on upper surface; pilose on both surfaces, margins and on lower surface of midribs; hairs biramous, white. Flowers: inflorescence 2-5 per plant, (1)2-flowered, corymbose, appearing with leaves; pedicels 15-60 mm long; perianth segments 4-5 x 2-3 mm, ovate-elliptic, yellow, sometimes red-striped below; Nov.-Jan. Fruit a capsule, 3-5 x 2-3 mm, opening by a circular slit, then splitting longitudinally into 3 lobes.
