Characteristics

Pods oblong-obovate, broadest near the apex, beaked, compressed, woody, dehiscent, the valves velvety, reticulately nerved and with 1(several) lateral marked nerves from base to apex in upper half, the upper suture narrowly winged.

Leaves paripinnate, with 1–2 pairs of leaflets; leaflets sessile, with only slightly excentric main nerve, the basal one with 0–1(2) glands on the proximal half close to the base; stipules free, valvate in bud, caducous.
Flowers in axillary panicles, almost sessile, ± distichous, some flowers functionally male, others bisexual; bracts small, early caduous; bracteoles pinkish, valvate, shortly fused near base.
Ovary fully developed only in some flowers; where fully developed shortly stipitate, (1)2(3)-ovulate, velvety; style excentric, geniculate; stigma peltate.
Sepals reduced, only the adaxial one sometimes present and often fused to the bracteoles.
Hypanthium very short or absent, when present fused with the bracteoles.
Seeds elliptic in outline, with a protruding base; testa very thin.
Stamens 6–8, fused at the base; anthers large, dorsifixed.
Petals usually 0, rarely a vestigial lateral one present.
