Characteristics

Moderate-sized tree to 10 or 15 m., the branchlets glabrous, lenticellate. Leaves moderate, 4-foliolate; petiole short, usually about 1 cm. long, marginate or alate apically, terete and callous basally; rachis 2-4 cm. long, usually prominently alate, the wing broadest apically, bearing a sessile, patelliform gland between insertion of the petiolules; leaflets 2 pairs, narrowly elliptic or elliptic-lanceolate, sharply acuminate apically, cuneate and somewhat inequilateral basally, the terminal pair up to 15 cm. long and 2-5 cm. wide, the basal pair about 2/3 as large, essentially glabrous above and below; stipules linear, about 5 mm. long, caducous. Inflores-cence of 1 to few spikes from the leaf axils, the spikes up to 10 cm. long and laxly floriferous for all except the lower several mm., glabrous or lightly puberulent. Flowers sessile, whitish; calyx campanulate or short-tubular, scarcely more than 1 mm. long, somewhat puberulent, the teeth prominent; corolla subfunnelform, 3-4 mm. long, gradually constricted basally, essentially glabrous; stamens about 12 mm. long, the staminal tube exserted 1-2 mm. beyond the corolla. Legume up to 12 cm. long and 1.5 cm. wide, flat, thickened about the seeds, lightly margined.

A tree. It grows 5-15 m high. The trunk is smooth and 30-50 cm across. The leaves are compound. There are 2-3 pairs of leaflets. The end pair of leaflets are 7-18 cm long and the pair at the base 4-12 cm long. The flowers are in spikes in the axils of leaves. They are 4-11 cm long. They can occur singly or in groups. The flowers are white and have a scent. The fruit is a pod about 10 cm long by 1 cm wide.

Environment

A tropical plant. It grows in tropical America. It will grow in the tropics and subtropics. It grows in moist and wet zones. In Argentina it grows below 700 m above sea level.
