Characteristics

Small to medium-sized tree. Stipules caducous. Petioles long; lamina glabrous, venation reticulate; primary lateral nerves widely spaced, arcuate, ascending, secondary lateral nerves present. Flowers mostly clustered in axils of current leaves, distinctly pedicellate. Sepals 5–6, free, spirally arranged, broadly ovate, closely imbricate. Corolla exserted; lobes 5, each with a dorsal pair of appendages. Stamens 5, epipetalous; staminodes present, alternating with stamens, petaloid. Ovary conoidal, pilose, tapering into a short thick style. Fruits broadly obovoid to subglobose, firm-walled but fleshy and very milky. Seed solitary, ± oblong to ellipsoid; scar lateral, oblong, extending almost whole length; cotyledons plano-convex; endosperm absent; radicle basal.
