Characteristics

Herbs with tunicated bulbs. Roots somewhat fleshy. Leaves basal, linear, flat, with a sheathing base, annual. Inflorescence usually with 1 flower on an erect scape. Flowers bisexual, regular, pedicellate, subtended by a spathe split into 2 valves. Perianth tubular-connate below with 6 spreading lobes above. Stamens 6, 3 inserted near base of perianth tube and 3 higher up; anthers dorsifixed, dehiscing by slits, introrse. Ovary superior, subglobose; ovules numerous per locule; style slender; stigma obscurely trilobed. Fruit a loculicidal capsule. Seeds numerous.
