Characteristics

Plant with odour of garlic when crushed. Leaves flaccid, to 35 cm long and 0.7 mm wide. Inflorescence to 30 cm long; scape slender; spathe valves purple-veined, scarious, c. 2.5 mm long. Flowers violet to blue fading to almost white, with darker purple vein adaxially on each lobe; pedicel to 5 cm long. Perianth persistent; tube obconical, to 1.2 cm long; lobes acute, to 1.6 cm long and 0.7 mm wide. Stamens having shorter whorl included in perianth tube and longer whorl slightly exserted from tube. Style filiform, c. 5 mm long; stigma between the 2 sets of anthers. Capsule cylindrical, to c. 1 cm long. Seeds obovoid, c. 2 mm long, pitted, black.

Summer-green perennial. Bulb c. 2 × 1 cm, white. Leaves all basal, c. 25 cm × 5 mm, ± flat, ± glaucous. Scape erect, 15-20 cm high. Flowers 1-(2), light blue-violet or whitish, to 3 cm diam., tubular portion c. 1 cm long, lobes acute with a single dark purple vein; pedicel c. 3 cm long, invested for more than ½ its length by 2 connate purple-veined spathe-valves. Capsule globose, c. 7-8 mm long.
