Characteristics

Somewhat woody liane with strong indumentum. Leaves longly petiolate, 3–5 (–7)-lobed. Male inflorescences of elongate axillary panicles, the lateral axes bearing 3–7-flowered clusters. Male flowers with 6 sepals, the 3 outer elongate to elliptic, the 3 inner obovate; petals 6, somewhat concave, mostly abruptly bent inwards at apex and with their margins recurved inwardly and enveloping the androecium; stamens 6, free or connate; anthers introrse, globular; thecae with transverse dehiscence. Female inflorescences of axillary racemes. Female flowers with sepals and petioles ± similar to those of the ♂; staminodes 6, tongue-shaped. Carpels 3, subovoid; styles small, recurved, the broad stigma produced into 2–3-cleft lamellae. Drupes ovoid or subovoid; exocarp strigose-hispid or setulose; endocarp ovoid, flattened, the ventral side ± smooth, the dorsal side clothed with numerous fibrillose hairs. Seeds with fleshy, ruminate endosperm.
