Characteristics

Petioles 0.3–1 cm long (in Flora Zambesiaca area).Leaf blades (6)9–15 × (4)6–10 cm, irregularly pinnatipartite, attenuate-cuneate at the base, glabrous or subglabrous on upper surface, sparingly to evenly hirsute-setose beneath especially along the midrib and main lateral nerves; all lobes narrowly oblong-oblanceolate, subacute or obtuse at the apex, usually dentate to irregularly pinnately lobulate on the margins with the lobules often denticulate, often with subeglandular-aristate teeth on the margin; main lateral nerves of the midrib (very variable in thickness and length) in 15–30 pairs, lateral nerves of the segments (also very variable) (7)12–15 pairs.

Male flowers: pedicels 1 mm long, bracteolate; calyx tube c. 1 mm long, calyx lobes 2 × 1 mm, triangular-ovate, subacute or obtuse, entire or glandular-ciliate, glabrous; petals 6.5–8 × 2 mm, oblong-oblanceolate, emarginate, glabrous or pubescent without, pilose within, reddish; disk glands 5, free, 0.75 × 0.5 mm, rectangular, flattened, truncate; stamens 8, the 5 outer 5.5 mm long and fused for one-third of their length, the 3 inner 6 mm long and fused for half their length, filaments glabrous, anthers 1.3 mm long, thecae free and slightly divergent at the base.
Female flowers: pedicels 2–3 mm long; calyx tube 1 mm long, calyx lobes 4 × 1.5 mm, oblong-lanceolate, obtuse, subentire to sparingly subeglandular-denticulate and/or fimbriate; petals similar to the male, but slightly longer and glabrous within; disk deeply 5-lobed, the lobes transversely oblong, truncate, slightly thickened; ovary 2.5 × 2 mm, 3-lobed to ellipsoid, smooth, ± glabrous or densely hirsute; styles c. 2 mm long, free or almost so, suberect, stigmas capitate, subcylindric, verruculose.
Seeds 9 × 5 × 4 mm, slightly compressed ellipsoid-subcylindric, somewhat shiny, brown, mottled buff, or buff, mottled brown; caruncle 2–3 × 4.5 mm, ± hemispherical, 2-lobed, the lobes fimbriate-multifid, orange or brown with a creamy fringe when dried.
Inflorescences terminal, up to 15 cm long, laxly pseudopaniculate; peduncle up to 8 cm long; bracts 4–8 mm long, narrowly triangular-lanceolate, acute, weakly glandular-stipitate to subeglandular-fimbriate.
Perennial herb, up to 300 mm tall. Leaves distinctly petioled, tip of lobes and lobules obtuse, denticulate. Cymes considerably overtopping leaves. Petals glabrous outside. Flowers orange-red.
A semi-succulent, sparingly hirsute-setose, perennial herb up to 40 cm tall; stems simple or sparingly branched, arising from a stout rootstock with red flesh.
