Characteristics

Shrubs, glabrous except ovary. Inflorescence of pedunculate axillary panicles, bracteate. Flowers bisexual; pedicel articulate at base. Hypanthium cylindrical, longitudinally and unilaterally split by emergent fruit. Sepals 4–6, imbricate. Corolla lobes twice as many as sepals, in a single whorl alternate to stamens. Stamens as many as corolla lobes, in a single whorl opposite and alternate to sepals, inserted at summit of hypanthium. Disc of irregular scales, annular. Ovary shortly stipitate, 1-locular; style terminal. Fruit emergent from apex of, and greatly exceeding, persistent hypanthium.
