Characteristics

A large tree.. Twigs lenticellate, greyish.. Young shoots, petioles, inflorescence axes etc. evenly puberulous to greyish or fulvous tomentellous.. Petiole up to 16 cm. long; glands clavate, recurved, 1–2 mm. long; petiolules 1.5–4(–5) cm. long, more slender than the petioles; leaflets (3–)5(–7), ovate or elliptic-ovate, (4–)7–12(–15) cm. long, (2–)4–7(–9) cm. wide, acutely acuminate, rounded or truncate at the base, firmly membranaceous to thinly chartaceous, lateral nerves 10–18 pairs, not or scarcely prominent above and beneath, sometimes slightly impressed above, glabrous and shiny above, sericeous when young, later evenly to sparingly pubescent and dull beneath, frequently blackening on drying.. Stipules narrowly cylindric, terete, slightly expanded and glandular at the apex, 2–4 mm. long.. Inflorescences up to 20 cm. long and 10 cm. wide; bracts narrowly triangular-lanceolate, 0.5–2.5 cm. long, usually with a clavate gland on each side at the base.. Male flowers: pedicels 1–1.5 mm. long; calyx-tube 1.5–2 mm. long, 1.5 mm. wide, teeth minute, fulvous tomentellous; petals spathulate, 6 mm. long, 2 mm. wide, obtuse or rounded, fulvous tomentellous without, glabrous within; disc-glands minute, fusiform-cylindric; outer stamens ± 4 mm. long, inner ± 5 mm. long, filaments puberulous at the base; anthers 1 mm. long.. Female flowers: pedicels stouter than in the ♂ flowers, 1–2 mm. long; calyx-tube 2 mm. long, 3 mm. wide, later accrescent to 3 mm. long, 5 mm. wide; petals ± as in the ♂; disc-lobes squarish in outline, truncate; ovary ellipsoid, 3–4 mm. long, 2–3 mm. diameter, densely tomentellous; styles 1 mm. long, tomentellous, stigmas strongly reflexed, 4-lobed, glabrous.. Fruits ovoid-quadrangular, 8.5–12 cm. long, 7.5–11 cm. diameter, densely verrucose, yellowish, becoming brownish.. Seeds 3.5 cm. long, 2 cm. wide.
